I use a greybox (Chinese) dongle purely for the fact that it has an 
external antenna connection. Comes in handy for the ol' wardrivin'... 
IIRC it uses the Prism II chip which goes straight in on Knoppix 6.x and 
SuSE 11.x, don't know about Ubuntu.
