Firstly welcome!

Secondly, I haven't used it since it was based on SLAX but I don't suppose
it's an entirely different beast.
The best way to get information I suppose would be to use the 'man' command
- say you wanted to see what flags nmap has to offer you could hit up "man
nmap", simple as that! If you're wanting more verbose details, say you want
to know what the tools is doing or if you're even using the wrong one then
google will have a trove on the backtrack tools - there sure is a high
interest in security 'testing' ;)

Not one to pry but have you considered a more mainstream distribution for
using for programming and (I assume you are hosting) hosting a mySQL
install? If someone does gain access to your system you've set them up for
hackers galore!
