[Nottingham] Temporary service interruption...

Folks,

NLUG website service was temporarily interrupted last night due to a few
lost bits... :-(

Our website is hosted on a 4GB Atom D510 server. One of the 2GB DIMMs
started losing bits that then corrupted the root partition... The system
setup has the server run almost 'diskless', so fortunately not too much
damage was done.

A reboot into Memtest86+ soon found the faulty memory. That was removed
and then a "LiveCD" (USB stick actually) allowed for diagnosis and fsck
cleanup.

It's back online but minus half its memory. 'Twill be interesting to see
how much swap gets used (if any). All good fun!

To get it back up to full bandwidth and a full compliment, and before I
order replacement RAM:

Has anyone got spare a 2GB DDR2-800 DIMM? ;-)

(The RAM type/speed is also described as "PC2-6400" or "PC6400".)

That's the first time I've seen a known good DIMM fail whilst in
service, even after a few years of use :-(

After the server fun, now to post up the Christmas nosh details!

Cheers,
Martin
