I knew it was often the case, but did not realise it was that rampant.
The usual trick is to create a new company for the movie production,
then the studio charges that vast sums for advertising, distribution
etc.  Thus the "movie" itself makes a loss (and pays the actors
little/nothing in profit share) and the studio rakes it in.  Throw in a
few tax dodges and Bob-s your father's brother.  Not all studios are
like this - so support the indies!  Free culture for your freedom!

That I did not know - but I think we are straying a tad from Linux. :-)
