So LWN didn't have their email server correctly configured, and they lay
the blame on Google?

I would have thought the number of people marking LWN stuff as "not spam"
would have been a bit of a hint that it's not actually spam. Still, with
their systems so heavily automated, Google themselves probably have no clue
what's actually going on.
