Thanks for the advice but the Aspire One is a netbook with no CD/DVD drive so I'll have to try to make a bootable USB stick sometime.

There is a well documented method for repairing grub - I have used it successfully on a couple of occasions. You boot from the live-CD and use the commandline to re-install grub on the partition on which it is presently installed. If you can't find it online, I might have made notes somewhere, but it's easy to find on the Ubuntu forums.
