There is another way. You can install the Ext2Fsd (http://ext2fsd.com) ext3/4 file system driver in windows which will allow you to access your Ubuntu partition in windows. I have used it in the past and it worked well for me.
There is also a program called Ext2Read which does a similar thing but I haven't used it myself.
