HPLIP 3.14.4 is the latest and you'd know if you were running it, what
with the download&compile (yes, even on Ubuntu).

I'd suggest getting the latest drivers from HP and seeing if that helps.
This is simply a matter of downloading and compiling (uninstall your
current HPLIP first). It's not difficult, just a matter of following the
steps.

Odd, most printers can run a self-test. I'd think a Photosmart like
yours would be capable of doing so. It's usually buried under settings
somewhere. As the fault appears on two printers, I rather doubt it's the
printer.

One thing you could try is running a live CD/USB and seeing if you can
print from there OK. If that works, you can be reasonably sure that it's
some config setting on your OS.

There should be a little "HP" icon in your notification area that lets
you fiddle with settings.
If not, try running "hp-toolbox".
