Or even that the mains power adapter plug/connector is loose and the
netbook is attempting to go into sleep/hibernate powerdown to then
immediately boot back up again when reconnected...

A 4 year-old netbook could have batteries that are now old enough to no
longer survive the mains power adapter not being connected...
