I read a comment in forum that this shouldn't happen with Mailman 3,
but lug.org.uk seem to be on 2.1.5.

There is a note on the lug.org.uk sign-up page that the password may
be sent back out to you.

I'm not sure what limitations lug.org.uk is running under; you can try
contacting  or do you have control over that?
to see what they say on the matter and if anything can be done.
