[Nottingham] Free Libre encrypted connections (https) ?

Folks,

This is likely a talk in itself...

We have the option of using "self-signed" 'security' certificates for
encrypted connections for such as "https". Most web browsers then give a
scary alert to scare off unaware users (most of the world)...

Rather than submit to the hegemony of the non-free closed (not always
trustworthy) club of "certificate authorities", what freedom options do
we have for encryptedly working with the main group of web browsers?

Cheers,
Martin
