I think we have all misunderstood the question and are now confusing
the poor fellow.
you don't need to edit /ect/hosts (or it's windows equiv) to use
virtual hosts on apache queries to the web port (normally 80) are
passed onto apache which uses the header to see what vhost the request
is for. The machine doesn't have to share the server name apache just
has to know it.
