That is to be expected; ideally in a University you are taught from a 
more theoretical point of view. I know after I graduated, I originally 
felt my time could have been better spent doing e.g. MCSE/CCNA style 
qualifications - However after a few more years, my view has changed 
somewhat and I think I better appreciate the background a university 
education gave me.

I think you're about right; once you have 2-3 years experience things 
will change, but getting that experience is the hard part.
