'ellow,
I am not sure if this will help you (as I'm not used to Gentoo/compiling
kernels) but if you have a GeForce2, would it be possible for you to use the
tarballs on the nVidia site to compile the drivers? They are not
open-source, which is *terrible*, but might they help you diagnose the
problem? If that won't work on Gentoo, maybe you could try smt like SuSE et
al on another partition/box?
For anyone who has an nVidia card, you may be interested in YanC - it seems
quite comprehensive. (http://yanc.sourceforge.net/index-en.html)
bye just now,
matthew

I just finished compiling a new kernel, but have been unable to get
framebuffer to work.
It is enabled in the kernel (gentoo-sources kernel - integrated, not
modularised), along with the only nvidia driver listed (for riva cards). It
boots fine, and displays the framebuffer logo, but it will not switch into a
higher mode when passed the vga=791 kernel options. (It just clicks a couple
of times.)
The card is a farly generic GForce2 AGP, and the kernel version is 2.4.19.
TIA,
