Greetings!
I fitted a new drive in my machine the other day so I thought I would have a
look at a different distro. (I normally use Debian stable). I got Mandrake
9.1 on a cover DVD so I had a go with that.
Wow! Pretty impressive! All my hardware was configured automagically (the
sound card needed a go in the configuration GUI, but it was configured on
first reboot). Being used to Debian it was a treat to have all the newest
software on tap. And a full set of anti-aliased fonts as default! (Maybe I
should bite the bullet and move on to 'testing' version of Debian)
It's not absolutely perfect - the KDE help browser seems to segfault now and
again. Unmounting my Zip drive seems to cause the system to go slightly wonky
in the /mnt department
On the strength of the hardware auto config, if I were M$ I would be bricking
it!
I'm not a convert from Debian though: APT still rocks! Getting used to
Debian's a bit like driving a VW Beetle - it's not the slickest beast on the
road, but with a little routine maintenance it will never let you down, and
DIY repairs are well documented.
