| Sorry not a Linux question,

| One the the best thing that has come from this is that Microsoft have
been
| ordered to release information about their API relating to Windows media.
| This is somthing that has been kept a trade secret, hindering competition.

Releasing the API is one thing, but releasing details of the format so
other players can be legally produced is another.

AFAIK mplayer handles all the formats anyway.

| Now that Microsoft have been told to do this, would it not be easier
for them
| to release Windows Media Player as open source GPL, and still bundle the
| software with the OS. Or, is the problem due to the fact that
Microsoft owns
| the media Player?

Not likely to have while the sky is blue.

Meanwhile, M$ are pushing media player 9 as the default format for
future DVD standard.
