When I ran fbset (which I found thanks to some direction from your
linked document), it looked like this:

mode "1280x854-60"
    # D: 79.815 MHz, H: 51.963 kHz, V: 60.003 Hz
    geometry 1280 854 1280 854 8
    timings 12529 128 16 8 1 112 3
    rgba 8/0,8/0,8/0,0/0
endmode

so I thought something along the lines of ``oh dear, it looks like I
have to invent a whole mode setup type thingy like with X and that will
be very painful''.  However, I just tried:

fbset -xres 640 -yres 400

and it just worked!  Now to see about changing fonts about...

Thanks *very* much, though -- that's really, really great news.  Now
I /can/ go completely console-based.
