Its a while since I did this and I don't access to the box anymore (it
was at a previous workplace) so i'm struggling to remember the
details, but it did take quite a bit of trial and error to get right.
There's a tutorial in this months Linux format or here:

which basically describe what i did. Starting the server and using
show status to see which variables are misbehaving and then editing
them in my.cnf directly. You might also be able to optimise your
code/table structure to lessen the load on the server. Could be a
possible discussion point for tonights meeting, but I'm afraid I can't
make it this month. :(
