[Preston] network problems

hi,
I 've a problem with internet connection,
basically when I try to connect my laptop (ubuntu 8.04)
with  *sudo pppoeconf*  the device doesn't recognise eth0,
 eth1 or eth0:avhai.

someone could have look at my laptop to show me
where i'm wrong?
