A belated hello to all at the Ryedale LUG.

Some of you know me, many of you will not. I first started using Linux
back in 1999 with Redhat 6 and have used pretty much every
distribution since then (with the exception of Gentoo; never could get
my head around that!). I founded the Scarborough LUG way back in
2001/2002 to find people with similar interests - this helped me to
learn a lot.

I moved from Scarborough in 2004 to embark on a degree in Hull and
there ended my association with the Scarborough LUG. In the time since
then i've become less of a tinkerer and more of a regular consumer of
technology. I tend to use a Mac as my main operating environment,
although do have a couple of linux servers running upstairs.

I recently bought a Netbook and decided to whack Linux on it - it
seems to me to be the perfect operating system for these devices. I
installed Fedora, got quickly pissed that it wouldn't recognised my
network shares without tinkering and wiped it for Ubuntu (evidence of
my change from tinkerer to consumer). This I am very happy with. Linux
has come a long way on the desktop since the last time that I used it.

Anyway, just a quick note to say hello. I always promised Al that I
would try and make one of the Ryedale LUG meetings. Now that I have
some transport I might just be able to fulfil that promise at last.
I'm dying for some of that cake that I keep reading about ;)

Cheerio,
Jamie
