I work (mainly) in Government delivering M$ solutions.... HMG gets huge
discounts on normal M$ list prices in the areas where I work.
They are using Linux increasingly at the server level, but it has yet to be
seriously considered at the desktop. There are issues over compatability,
for example, running macros and embedded objects. Quite fundamental issues
that will not go-away. I know as I use and evaluate both flavours. Two years
ago, I was asked to write a report - usual stuff - costs benefits etc of a
M$ based solution, a Linux based desktop, a Sun/Staroffice thin client
solution. From where they were (Win98 with Office97), there really wasn't an
alternative way forward.
I think there is a stronger case for SME's to adopt Linux, but there are
still concerns about support and useability. There is also the issue of
transition costs from M$ office to Linux anything. They are not the same to
use and as techies we often lose sight of the cost of adoption and personal
grief that your average user has to put up with when adopting a new system.
This applies to M$ as well..
Head down and waiting for the flame war..
