They also take more bandwidth than mailing lists or usenet as with
either of those you'll only get the messages once whereas most web based
forums send you an entire thread (complete with pointless graphics for
smilies, even icons for the person posting) in a few pages.
You end up with people reloading the forums often as well so as not to
miss out on new posts.
Replacing mailing lists with web forums is in my opinion a crap idea
frankly. They might have their uses for commenting on small things or
throw away news style sites put not for serious discussion and linux
support.
