I think the point here is that most people running Solaris on a desktop
seem to also be using an older Ultra and not the latest kit.

| Er, you actually *use* SMC? Virtually nobody I know does...
I did not say that I use it - but I would like such things to be
runnable on a GNU/Linux box in any case. That Sun can write a Java based
administration tool and then completely fail to distribute it in any
portable way is a sign that someone didn't really get the point.
Sure they don't really care about non-Solaris or non-token-gesture-Linux
but they could at least write stuff which would be easier for them to
port themselves in future - as it is the version of SMC that I was
moaning about used arcane shell scripts to keep it together.
jcm> : The Sun compiler is probably ok if you like that sort of thing.

| Forte CC is vastly better at producing code than GCC ever will be.
That's a grand statement. Perhaps it is true, perhaps not. In any case I
personally prefer gcc for the sake of my own sanity and that of others.
| OTOH, lazy developers write gcc-specific code
Or they use gcc-specific code because there is no c99 equivalent for
what they want to do so there is no official way in any case.
Some people do needlessly use non standard code but then until recently
even stuff like tagged initialisers would have been hard to do right.
Cheers,
Jon.
