# apt-get install sig2dot

sig2dot does not depend upon all of graphviz, just the neato program. Springgraph contains an open-source workalike for neato; Debian's sig2dot build depends upon this instead of graphviz (the latter not being open source). 

Result: you don't need to touch graphviz at all.
