A kernel recompile with CONFIG_IDEDISK_STROKE has indeed done the
trick; I can now boot without the need for Ontrack.  Thanks Graham for
pointing me in the direction of the dmesg output - without that I'd
never have suspected that the kernel was seeing all of the disk but
pretending not to.
