d'oh!

after much firkling about I decided to try the Pioneer as master on its 
own, and found that I'd jumpered the wrong pins!

For some reason the pin header for the master/slave/cable-select jumper 
is a 10-way block and in moving the jumper from the cable select 
position to what I thought was slave I'd actually moved it to one of the 
redundant positions. Ghod knows what it was doing on that setting.

What misled me particularly was that (a) it showed up OK in BIOS and (b) 
I was able to burn a DVD on it after booting from the LiveCD. Ho hum.
