I was gessing that's where it was looking (on hd0,2) for vmlinuz-...


On ubuntu:
ls -l /vmlinuz
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root 25 2005-04-11 23:15 /vmlinuz -> 
boot/vmlinuz-2.6.10-5-386

so I guess you'd have to have either /vmlinuz or boot/vmlinuz-2.6.10-5-386
