This is definitely one of those cases where what a protocol can do is
rather more important than what it was [initially] intended for.
Disconnected use of IMAP (i.e. copies on both server and client) is
reasonably widespread, IIRC IMAP even includes specific constraints
about message identifier stability in order to facilitate this mode of
operation.
