Ok, problem solved. Kinda.

There is a good reference for getting keys recognised by the kernel
firstly and secondly translated into something known in X.

http://linux.seindal.dk/item65.html

In my specific case I managed to the logitec EX110 slash/pipe key next
to left shift working by running these command in my .xsession file just
before starting gnome.

xmodmap -e "keycode 94 = backslash bar"

You can figure out what key you pressed (keycode) and what it is tied to
in X (keysym) by running xev.

You can then use xmodmap to see what your map looks like and to change
your map.

I assume the best way to solve this problem is to create a new keyboard
map for the keyboard/layout. Anybody with some suggestions on reading?

Thanks for the help.
Cheers,
Pieter
