This suggests that the "Unknown key" messages are not the problem
(although they may be related in some unpleasant way) as you are using
the same hardware in both cases, without rebooting.
My guess is that you actually have a keymap (i.e. not keyboard model)
mismatch between console and X. Try the various UK and US keymaps in
Gnome's keymap selector.
