Neil, I'd run the firewall on the same box, and I'd strongly recommend 
Shorewall (http://www.shorewall.net/) as an easy way to set up a 
firewall. Bit of reading needed the first time, but the QuickStart 
guides (under Documentation) will get you there (and if you have 
questions then feel free to ask).
