When I set up spamassassin I followed the advice on the Infinite Ink
site's procmail guide (google for "Infinite ink procmail
spamassassin"); this included a section on how to conditionally invoke
spamassassin (e.g. only bother for emails < 250k since spam is always
small in size). I expect that you could tweak procmail similarly to
fix your issue.
That said, my setup is three years old now and there may well be better
ways of doing it (the procmail syntax is a right pig, for starters).
