[sclug] / filling up with /var/tmp/srt?????? files

My root partition periodically fills up with files in /var/tmp called 
sort?????? e.g.
-rw-------  1 root    root    21814823 2008-08-06 12:39 sort0IKfEV
-rw-------  1 root    root    22782889 2008-08-06 12:54 sort0VO30h
-rw-------  1 root    root    22048179 2008-08-06 08:55 sort1Z2CBJ
-rw-------  1 root    root    21785884 2008-08-06 12:48 sort1ZUCrQ

which seem to be generated (but not cleaned up) by updatedb, run by 
anacron. Any well-known[1] gotchas I should be aware of?
