Doh!! I have just discovered the following in my /etc/hosts:

209.85.229.18   mail.google.com

Removing this solves the problem.

Only I can have put it there (a long time ago, probably trying to be clever
in avoiding a DNS lookup for frequently used sites).  Google must've
changed their IP addresses without sending me personal notification (what
are they thinking?)
