[sclug] Shell accounts?

Looks like I'm out'o free tier Amazon AWS. The last month cost me $18
for hosting. Which is fine, but I can do better than that.

Pretty much all I use my server for these days is web hosting and CGI.
Therefore it seems to me that I don't need a dedicated server at all.
That way I don't have to administrate it (and it's cheaper).

Once upon a time there used to be a thing known as a shell server, where
you got a login on a shared machine. Hunting around I can find the usual
free crap, but I also see that Mythic Beasts do reasonable shell
servers, complete with IP-based https, etc. And IIRC they have a
reasonable reputation.

Are shell servers still a useful thing? Has anyone used Mythic Beast's
product (e.g. I'd be interested to know whether I actually share a real
machine or get a single-user environment in a chroot or jail)? What are
the security implications like? Any other products I should look at?
