Thank god for Debian! Gentoo is fun, if you either have a fullish Gentoo CD
or a good (i.e. phat) Internet connection, and also if you have anything
from a few hours to a couple of days to do the install - compiling
everything from scratch can take some time. Last time I tried it was on a
PII350 with 64 meg RAM, and I think it took about 8 hours or so to get to a
place where i could login and do stuff. It's a great idea, and I think
there's a place for it in distroland, but for the mythical Joe Public I
wouldn't recommend it.

I agree with the thought that Red Hat isn't that much use to folk like us
wanting a nice desktop OS to use, but I don't think we're their market
anymore. Perhaps RH want technically-minded folk to use Debian now? :)

OTOH, a Red Hat lurving friend of mine tried the latest Mandrake release,
and was seriously impressed by its hardware detection skills, picking up
graphics cards, networking, and even scanners with relative ease.
