I sort of agree, but

To me a mailing list immediately makes you feel a part of a community. And you 
don't have to do anything special to keep in touch.  If anything is 
happening, like this topic,  you just know about it.  

A web based forum requires the subscriber to actually make the effort to visit 
the site, more like going to a slug meeting rather than coming across your 
friends & colleagues at the bus stop, in the supermarket, pub, etc. where you 
happen to be anyway.
