Hallo all : -
Time for another lead balloon, since
http://websurf.nao.rl.ac.uk/ would lead you to tomorrow 22nd
giving us the winter solstice at 0704 UTC.
So is there really no place for a committee element in what
SLUGs on through the year? Suppose there were to be enough
interest from libraries or politicians or charities, and some
information-gathering or introductory work was asked for (with
a little funding maybe) how on earth would they cope? Microsoft
man recently sent and it reached Willie who passed it out to us
which was fine, but suppose it had been something more, the
Scottish Executive e-envoy or whatever they have, with a good
offer? Would they even find the right pub, never mind knowing
what the fluffy penguin looked like?
I don't say we want to be pioneers, though, so if the world of
Linux and LUGs in UK or their equivalents abroad does without
committees or suchlike organizational forms that's good enough
for me anyway.
My proposal is that an interim group of volunteers (?say the
first five who joined SLUG if willing to serve, along with,
similarly, the most recent ten to sign up?) be asked to look at
a practical question or two and report with recommendations to
the rest of us. One idea for their attention could be the one
about a Glasgow (or Greater Glasgow?) LUG and SLUG itself
taking up a new (sort of federal) position, which was left
undecided I think. If that gets something going then maybe
they could look at ideas for a simple committee setup and tell
us their thinking.
