I don't know the answer in general, but certainly mentioning the
community project I was involved in (Tardis: http://www.tardis.ed.ac.uk/)
was what got me my first job when I graduated.  Last time I looked at
my CV, I think it mentioned that I package a few bits and pieces for
Debian and that I've contributed to a few projects (most notably inn,
I guess).  I've no idea if anybody pays attention to that bit though.
