I'd hazard a guess that this is a feature of the Epson inkjet printers
which have a separate ink cartridge and print head.  IIRC[1], most
inkjet printers of that era had a combined print head/cartridge and so
when the ink ran out you also replaced the print head.  The Epson inkjet
I had only had a replaceable ink cartridge.  This 'internal timer' was
probably the estimated lifetime of the print head.
