Hmmm. Sounded good. Unfortunately my Suse 9.0 install recognised it was also a 
CD writer and setup SCSI emulation - and you can't run hdparm on a SCSI 
drive....but its still talking to the IDE drive...so I tried your suggestion 
on /dev/hdc, and turned on 32bit I/O for good measure....and Hey Presto! it 
worked.

In fact it worked so well I've decided to use it on all my hard drives ;)

Remind me to buy you a pint after the next meet.

Thanks also to Lawrence for the suggestion to check the fb device.
