[Scottish] Suse desktop short cut problem

Hi there,
I'm running Suse9.1 and have installed Firefox and Thunderbird.  They 
live in usr/bin/ 
and I've created 2 desktop shortcuts. However, when I click the icon to 
star app the icon just bounces up and down for a while and nothing 
happens.  I can only actually start the apps by CDing to the DIR and  
typing  ./thunderbird  in  the Shell.

Has any had a similar problem and came up with the solution?
