Myths and Reality of CyberCrime

Companies and regulatory organisations are investing heavily in detecting and
protecting themselves against CyberCrime. However, there are very few public
studies of major attacks. This talk will take the audience through a multi-
million dollar fraud that relied on the IT infrastructure of banks in the US
and Ireland. We will show that much of the investment in CyberCrime
protection is being wasted. It would have provided no defence against the
attacks that were used in this fraud.
Prof. Christopher W. Johnson holds a personal chair in Computing Science at
the University of Glasgow. His work helps companies and public bodies to
learn lessons from previous failures involving complex IT infrastructures.
He has published more than 200 papers, has held a NASA fellowship for his work
on accident investigation and is currently involved in drafting guidelines for
the future safety of European Air Traffic Management. More information is
