I've not been paying much attention to the linux IDE support but AFAIR
SATA supports command queueing, so it wouldn't surprise me if newer PATA
disks and/or chipsets do the same.

Having said all that, I really would gently push you towards some kind
of hardware RAID solution if you can bring yourself to spending some
cash - my experience with software RAID under linux has been that
performance can be a bit patchy (seems to be luck of the draw whether it
works well or not) and recovering a degraded array can sometimes be a
bit of a ball ache.
