The primary reason, when I switched machines, that I didn't use Linux on the new machine like I did on the old dual-boot one was that the winmodem wasn't supported. Proprietary hardware being the reason.
Neither of my ADSL modems, when I went to ADSL were supported in Linux, again proprietary bits of whatever.
Now I have a router all that has changed. I slapped a Knoppix CD in, booted up and got that full connected to the internet experience. Just as Gordon said, it just regards the connection to the router as a network connection.
