Hi Folks,
The next ScotLUG meeting will be on Thursday 28th November at the usual
spot, the Electron Club in the CCA. We should be kicking around the
Electron Club around 7:00PM.
This month, we have a talk from Gordon Martin, who has kindly offered to
speak about Scuttlebutt.
Scuttlebutt (ssb) is a Peer 2 Peer (p2p) and off-grid Social Network
protocol. Applications built with the Scuttlebutt protocol (such as and
Patchwork, a facebook like UI for desktop, and Manyverse for android) store
your data, the data of your friends (and their friends) on the device,
allowing posts to be made and old posts to be explored offline. You can
keep up to date with your friends' posts by replicating with them over
LANs, Bluetooth and over the Internet. This makes scuttlebutt a resilient
network which does not rely on any central servers to operate (although
fungible servers may be deployed by anyone for convenient replication over
the Internet).
In this talk, Gordon will introduce some of the motivations behind the
project, and a high overview of how the protocol works, and give a demo of
some Scuttlebutt viewer applications (including a chess implementation, and
good-reads like book review app.)

Following the talk we will be adjourning to a local bar, this is likely to
Henglers Circus, across the road from the CCA. There is no requirement to
purchase food or drink if you don’t want to.
Hope to see you all there.
