Use the command line tools to start with.
Does the command lsmod (as root) show the module ide-scsi loaded? If not, do
a
# modprobe ide-scsi
Check the end of /var/log/messages to ensure that it has loaded OK. Then use
the command
# cdrecord --scanbus
to check that the writer shows. Once you have reached that stage you should
be able to do a test burn as root using the gui tools (which are just a
frontend to cdrecord). If that works, try burning a disc as an ordinary
user.
