This sounds like a familiar situation... I had a similar experience 
recently with Red Hat Advanced Server 2.1.  It turned out that after the 
"Freeing unused kernel memory" message, everything else was sent to a 
serial console... I don't know if Fedora does the same, but it might be 
an avenue worth investigating.
