Hi, i use a very simple setup for my boxes
1 suse linux 8.2 pro
2 debian linux woody
3 vector linux
4 suse linux 8.2 dual boot winXP(my girls pc but she is coming arround
to linux)

I just use a Belkin gateway router. modem>router router>machines
you can setup IP forwarding if you are running your own ftp and http
servers and share printers and file share between all systems (i use
samba). This may not be the most technicaly elegant solution, but its
quick simple to setup and cheep to implement as the router only cost me
£40 new from pc world. IPs are assigned via DHCP. There are many more
connfigurable routers that will do the same job as well if not better.
Though not cheeper.

p.s. I have a samba configuration shell script that makes setting up
samba on your network a snap. Please feel free to mail me if you or
anyone else would like a copy of this script, I would be glad to share
it with anyone to whom it would be usefull.
