[Andre Answer:] I feel a bit silly answering my own query. However according
to the Suse support database:
 "As of SuSE Linux 8.2, the IMAP mail daemon no longer allows
   plain text passwords for unencrypted sessions. Plain text
   passwords are only allowed in SSL-encrypted sessions."
Details on how to do this can be found by searching for IMAP on the support
database.

[Andre Answer:] Pine works fine, so the imap deamon is functional

[Andre Answer:] Yes done that. SuSE 8.2 uses the WU imap server as default
which is the squirrelmail default as well.
